Story
When I was 7, I loved to draw and still do. My mother offered me a choice: art lessons or dance lessons. Thinking of myself as an artist, I chose dance. Unfortunately, my dance teacher later met with my parents and suggested that dance wasn’t the right fit for me. Needless to say, my dance journey didn’t start off smoothly.
Fast forward many years, and by the age of 20, I had opened my own dance studio. Still, I felt the pull to explore other opportunities, and I knew one day I would move to NYC.
In 1984, I saw the movie Breakin’, and it changed everything. I met two incredible dancers who became my mentors, teaching me for three years. That’s when my passion truly ignited. In 1999, I flew to New Mexico with three of my dancers to film my instructional video, Street Style. To my surprise, it went viral in a way I could never have anticipated.
However, as the years passed, the momentum brought a flood of comments—some hurtful and cruel. I chose to stay silent and avoid reading those negative remarks. Through my faith, I believed God would eventually turn this situation around, though it often felt like an eternity. I knew it had to be the right time and the right person to help me confront what I had avoided for 15 years. That person turned out to be a girl in L.A. named Taylor Tarantino. You can find the full details of that story on my TikTok and Instagram.
During this time, I began teaching for Showstopper Conventions, and that’s where Debbie and Dave Roberts changed the trajectory of my life. I met incredible people, visited numerous studios, choreographed routines, and even started judging for Showstopper. I’m still with them today.
Looking back, I could never have imagined all the amazing things that have happened just because I finally faced my fears and stepped outside my comfort zone. I now have a brand deal with Lucky Energy Drink, a testament to how growth comes from overcoming hurt, anger, and feelings of rejection.
Through it all, I’ve learned so much. Seeing how God is transforming my journey for the better has been the most rewarding part. Let’s do this together!
